Bob Dylan's Possible Brush with Death 50 Years Ago
Michael Tannen is a licensed real estate salesperson working at the Corcoran Group in Brooklyn, New York. When he is not working, Michael Tannen enjoys listening to Bob Dylan, one of his favorite musicians. Dylan, an influence on innumerable fans and musicians, narrowly escaped death 50 years ago when he crashed his motorcycle in upstate New York.
Like many things related to Bob Dylan, the crash that could have ended his career and life is still shrouded in mystery - some don’t even believe that it happened. On the afternoon of July 29, 1966, Dylan was riding his 1964 Triumph motorcycle home from his manager’s house with his wife following behind him in their car. With the afternoon sun in his eyes, Dylan says he was blinded. After hitting an oil slick, he slammed on his brakes and went flying.
Early reports on the incident were vague and sometimes contradictory, leading to rumors that the singer had been disfigured, gravely injured, or even killed. Dylan was generally ambiguous about the accident in interviews, writing, “I had been in a motorcycle accident and I’d been hurt, but I recovered,” in his memoir, Chronicles.
While there was never any official police or medical record of the crash, Dylan would eventually reveal that he broke a vertebra in his neck and received a concussion from the fall. The accident gave Dylan time to rest and recuperate from a busy couple of years. He had previously released three of his most popular and career-defining records, with Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited in 1965 and his 1966 hit, Blonde on Blonde.
